  1. Lisa says:

Carole’s initial great love was Russ Columbo – a singer and violinist. I read this from biographies written about her. I think this right. He died tragically and it grieved her immensely.

  2. Lisa says:

Hmmm, did some numbers and Columbo didn’t come into her life until she was 25. She had met William Powell when she was about 21. And they married in 1931 and divorced around 1934, I think. She worked for Mack Sennett prior to that time. Lombard had a few romances after her divorce with Powell, but it wasn’t until Colombo came into her life where she had been quoted as saying ‘he was the true love of her life’.

Okay I’m still going with Russ Columbo.

  3. Kendra says:

    RUSS’s dad! haha, jk

  4. Lisa says:

Did I miss something? Is there another Russ Columbo running amuk somewhere? LOL

  5. Lisa says:

But was Hughes an initial great love of Carole’s or just a romance? He certainly had plenty of romantic affairs with other actresses during that time and on. Carole was even interviewed and was asked who her real great love was (before Gable) and her response was Russ Columbo.

  6. Rose says:

@Vince: that is where I got my guess from. If Hughes was Carole’s first serious romance, I feel for the girl! LOL.
