Carole Lombard

A few months back I was interviewing an individual on Miss Lombard and one comment he made has stuck in the forefront of my mind ever since: “Carole Lombard? She was SUBLIME!”

Sublime:Characterized by nobility; majestic. Of high spiritual, moral, or intellectual worth. Not to be excelled; supreme.

Many believe that Marilyn Monroe was the most photogenic woman who ever lived. I do not disagree with them. Monroe had a distinct ability to capture an essence so soft and sweet, yet so sensual and “sexual” on the camera. She was surreal.

When I look over photos like the one above, I realize you know, Lombard had IT too. If her essence lacked elements of softness or vulnerability, it is because in their place Lombard instilled strength and supremity. There is an old saying: “There are no victims, only volunteers.” I think Carole understood that- that she was in control of her own destiny. She was her own domain. She WAS sublime.

I fully concur with your comments regarding Lombard vs. Monroe. Taking nothing away from Marilyn — who was a talented actress and from all accounts a nice, if troubled, person who never took her sex symbol status all that seriously — Carole’s life has more resonance to women of today. (It helped that the 1930s were a far better time for actresses than the ’50s, as the studio system was breaking down.) Monroe was a victim, Lombard a victor.

    Beautiful photo, BTW.
