A couple of weeks ago I saw Russell Brand perform. He was hilarious. And brilliant. Equally impressive was the magnificent theatre I was sitting in: the Wiltern Theatre located on the corner of Wilshire Boulevard and Western Avenue in Los Angeles. The 80 yearold theatre is art deco at its best. It’s stunning. I wish I had taken photos of the interior but it was dark and I was flashless. At one point during the show I remember thinking to myself, “Wonder if Carole came here?” (This is my litmus for historical Hollywood locations these days).
Well I did some sleuthing and found a video of the star-studded grand opening of the theatre then known as the Warner Brothers Western Theatre. On October 7, 1931 Hollywood’s finest came out to support the theatre and see the premiere of Alexander Hamilton. Wilshire was spanned by a bridge which the audiences for the opening crossed over to enter the theatre. Some of the stars included James Cagney, Loretta Young, Joan Crawford and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. You’ll also see Mr. and Mrs. Clark Gable- back when it referred to Ria. Finally, there’s Carole. She’s accompanying her husband at the time William Powell. William Powell conducted the dedication as the master of ceremonies. Both are escorted by Moe Silver, General Manager of Warner Brothers. You’ll notice that her name is spelled “Carol.” Old habits die hard. Enjoy!

70 years ago today, Carole Lombard and Clark Gable officially became known as “The Gables”.
On March 2, 1939 the two lovebirds eloped (with Otto Winkler chaperoning) to Kingman, Ariz., to be married without informing friends. The two remained married nearly three years until death did them part. Even then Clark continued to love and cherish Carole until his own death when the two would be re-united. (He is buried beside her). But let’s not get sad here . . .
In celebration of this momentous occasion, the Queen of Lombard Tributes, Carolyn, also known as the other Profane Angel, has made another one of her fantabulous videos for you all to enjoy. It is AMAZING! Check it out:
On March 12, 1939, The Gulf Screen Guild Show presented “Tailored by Toni” starring Carole Lombard and James Stewart.
Directed by Dorothy Arzner and written by Connie Lee, the comedy-drama centers around Toni (Carole Lombard), New York’s formost designer of mens clothes and Peter, a Greenwich village author played by James Stewart.

This is my favorite part of Love Before Breakfast featuring Carole Lombard and Preston Foster. The next costume party I go to I want to be decked like a Lombard peacock. Doesn’t she look divine?

Here’s a one hour special on the life of Clark Gable hosted by Peter Lawford. It’s not the most interesting documentary and Lawford is dry at times however it features a lots of footage of our girl, including footage of Carole on her bond tour. (I’ve seen it well over ten times and STILL break into tears when she makes her speech). There is also great commentary on her made by Andy Devine, William Wellman, and Adela Rogers St.John. She is so special. Shit, I’m tearing up again. Enjoy!

Watch Carole Lombard and George Raft steam-up the screen in this little number from Bolero.
One word: PRE-CODE!
The film offered Raft the rare chance to depart from his gangster type-cast and play something a little closer to home: a dancer, which had been his profession in New York City. As for Lombard, rumour has it that a double was used for her in many of the shots in the dance scenes. However Mitchell Leisen, who actually directed one of the dance numbers, said on several occasions that she was a terrific dancer.
Either way she, Raft, and the dancing are simply divine!
