Evolution of a Bathing Beauty
Vincent, please take a seat before reading this post!
Belinda was kind enough to scan and send us some clippings of Carole Lombard and this one in particular caught my eye:
Look at the picture at the top right. It is an image many of us have seen before only this time, when I looked at it close-up, the first thing I said to Belinda was: “Is that her boob?!”
I swear I saw some nipple action but seeing as how this appeared in Motion Picture magazine, my eyes must just be playing tricks on me.
Full-size it and see for yourself!

NEW CAROLE LOMBARD BIOGRAPHY

I’ve seen the pic before too, but just to be sure about the alleged nipple, I doubled the picture in size, then redoubled it. No nipple. I’m guessing Carole and the photographer showed as much breast as possible without invoking the ire of the censor’s office, even in those pre-Code days.
One publicity still that was censored by the Breen office was for “Twentieth Century,” as she and John Barrymore are locked in an embrace and Lombard shows lots and lots of leg. But check her top — could this be an exposed nipple for all the world to see? (It’s hard to tell.) To judge for yourself, go to http://community.livejournal.com/carole_and_co/62897.html, then double-click the picture (it may not be safe for work).
Oh, Carla, by the way, I am sitting down while writing this response.
Then again, pictures such as these explain why Viagra, Cialis, et al didn’t need to be invented for another few decades.
LOL. I tried to upload the image in the original 3000 pixel size but the site couldn’t take it. It almost looks like they airbrushed the nipples out for some of these stills. Ay yai yai . . .
The smudge in the middle makes it look like she is exposed. They probably did airbrush it out.
BTW, Carla, what issue of Movie Mirror was this in? (Should’ve asked earlier, but those Lombard pix, uh, distracted me.)
LOL, nip slip! it’s funny how some of these pics of old stars can be pretty racy
Vincent: Oops! It was actually Motion Picture magazine and Belinda says it’s from 1938. Do you know the actual month Miss B?
Kendra: Old Hollywood could be very risque indeed! But always classy!
I love the picture of Carole with the doll.
Could be form this one ..not sure though.

The photo of Carole came from Motion Picture September 1938
with her very own Clark Gable on the cover…
You guys make me laugh! So, Vince maybe I should take some of these photos of Carole to France with me to entice any gentlemen I might encounter? Or should I just hang around the Crazy Horse or Moulin Rouge! LOL.
