The always generous and spectacular BELINDA sent me these two clippings some time ago and I guess I forgot to post and tell! Check out Carole Lombard in “GLAMOUR GOES PF-F-F-T!” which captures some candids and silly moments during the production of Nothing Sacred.

Carole Lombard: Glamour Goes PF-F-F-T!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE her shoes! ALWAYS but especially in the first clipping where she is sprawled out. She was never with out a suave pair.

Glad you’re back! I was a bit concerned when I hadn’t seen any new entries for a while.

This two-page spread is from Photoplay, though I can’t recall the precise issue; I saw it on microfilm at the Library of Congress last year, but the quality wasn’t good enough to scan for “Carole & Co.” Thanks, Belinda.

P.S. I love the stretched-out shot, too (revealing the Lombard legs in all their glory — I am in awe!). I would love to find the photo on its own, without the insets butting in, just as I’d like to find that shot of Carole on the back of “Screwball,” as I’ve never seen it anywhere else. Perhaps Larry Swindell knows more about it.

Hi Vincent! The photo on the back of Screwball is a Paramount still. I saw it in the AMPAS files which is where Swindell also got it from. It’s stunning. The whole series is actually. I want them all for keeps!

Love the candid shot of her with her legs sprawled out. Wonder what she was thinking in that pic? Perhaps she was pondering who the next recipient would be for another practical joke? Or what kind of screwball party she would throw next? She is and she isn’t a mystery to me. If that makes any sense.

I know exactly what you mean. Sigh . . .

Were there any reels of interviews with her? It just seems most of the information written about her (mostly in magazines) does not offer a clear glimpse into who she was off the record. It seems we get only small glimpses that may only offer half truths. I’ve always wanted to know what she was really like in private away from any cameras. Was she always kicking the gutter with her well known profanity? Or did she also have a laidback side where she could converse with people without the screwball intentions? I think Gable offered her a good stable balancing homelife that helped calm her nervous energy. But I want to know how she truly spoke and acted away from Hollywood and her collegues. It’s just such a tragedy she died that young. If she had lived to be an old woman, I wonder how much of the young playful girl would have remained in her? Certainly the jokester and quick witted comic, but would she have hardened inside like many of her contemporary’s who lived longer lives? I’m thinking of Lucille Ball, Joan Crawford, Greta Garbo, Betty Davis. I know they were all different and paid their dues. But it seems life got the best of them once they reached a certain age. So, in getting back to my original thought who was the real Carole Lombard? Did she really live long enough to know who she was? This is something that has been on my mind in the last thirty years.

Sorry to ramble on Carla. I just never had the chance to voice these questions and thoughts. I guess it’s like an itch that needs to be scratched. : )

  6. [...] Carla Valderrama at carolelombard.org ran an entry called “Lombard Goes Pf-f-f-t” (http://carolelombard.org/lombard-goes-pf-f-f-t). It came from a two-page spread in Photoplay called “Glamour Goes Pf-f-f-t”; I’m [...]
