Tally’s Lombard Collection: Part 6 – A Letter From Mrs.Gable V
Pam my dear: ask and you shall receive! Tally’s sharing with us that letter from Kay Gable about the sale of Carole Lombard’s brown dress and flowers. So here you go:
“Here is a scan of Kay’s letter mentioning the dress sale in Feb of 1963.The woman’s name was SIMON, and she had lost the original envelope, as the outside says, but inside was one of those colored “STARS HOMES” post cards that are easily found..(On the back of it was a sketch of Mickey Rooney’s home) The flowers are still stitched as Kay mentions.(I wonder what OTHER pictures she had sent to Mrs. Simon???)”

Thanks to the letter, one appreciates Kay Gable, who understood what Carole Lombard meant to her husband and was not in any way threatened by her memory.
I agree with you Vincent. Oh Tally thank you for sharing all of this with us!! I can’t wait to see the seal coat.
Oh, Carla and Tally, you can’t imagine how thrilled I was to see Kay’s letter!! It is absolutely priceless as are the brown dress and corsage. Tally, you had to be over the moon when these items of Carole’s arrived, and what a provenance to have accompanied the dress! I am just in awe of all your pieces, Tally, as everyone on here is. I cannot thank you enough for sharing your fabulous collection with us. What an honor and privledge it must be to be the keeper of so many precious mementos of Carole’s. And I have a feeling Miss Lombard is looking down on you, Tally, watching over you and pleased they fell into such loving hands. Thank you again, Tally and Carla, for this one of a kind site devoted to Carole!!!

Have any of you read the book Kay wrote after Clark’s death? Just curious to read your opinions about it.
Thank you Tally for sharing this. Kay was indeed a class act. I have read her book, which is a delight. She mentions Carole in it quite a few times (and even includes a picture of Clark & Carole). She says, “One of the reasons our marriage was such a success was that we lived in the present, not the past. I know many people have been curious as to my feelings about Carole Lombard. I never met her, never saw her in my life, except in films. But I have always had the greatest respect for what she and Clark had together. I think he knew this and admired it without ever saying it.” Truly a classy lady.
Rose…I have read Kay’s book, and can highly recommend it. It’s very poignant especially where she details the sudden and untimely passing of Clark. I was surprised at how candid she was, and also I enjoyed all the photos she shared. It’s a great read, and her love for Clark clearly showed. That is why I found it so fascinating to read her letter in regards to Carole’s dress, it was so in character with how Kay came across in her book.

Thanks for the quote Carolyn! I got to get a copy of that book. I’ve been searching all over and the cheapest I can find is $50. Got to be frugal at the rate I’m buying research material. lol.
