Tally’s Lombard Treasures: Part 3
She’s back with some more! Today Miss-y Tally has rummaged through her fabulous collection of Carole Lombard-ilia and decided to share the following with us:
First we have Carole’s black“lambs wool/treble clef pin hat.”
Here are just two of the many pictures featuring Carole wearing that black hat:

Next, we have“a picture of a copper flower pin, the 1920s-era locket she wore, also 2 clips (turquoise and silver, similar to certain diamond & ruby clips Mr G gave her and have since become legend). They are in very good shape, only missing 2 stones in the pair. Amazing to see something to show where perhaps he might have gotten the idea from prior to that Christmas gift!”
Here’s a close-up on those clips:

I love the locket! I wonder what the story is behind it? Tally?

NEW CAROLE LOMBARD BIOGRAPHY

Thank you Tally! Wonderful treasures. I too am interested in the locket. Do you have any information about it Tally?
Gorgeous stuff, and I’m delighted Tally shared it with us!
Thanks again, Tally. What else is in that treasure chest of yours?
The locket’s paperwork had note w/ it, kind of brittle and browned, dating it back to the mid-20s, where it says “Gift to Carol Lombard M.Cooper..hearts and spurs/for Luck”.(Miriam Cooper was a silent film actress who was in BIRTH OF A NATION for DW Griffith.)I assume since that is the year she signed w/Fox,seemed like an important year and something a girlfriend would do.It seems to make sense, but there is no other info except the Sale Notes, date stamped, stating same information, date sold in 1976 , and that note.(Funny that Ms Cooper/also known as Mrs Raoul Walsh, (ANOTHER interesting tie!)had passed on the year of the sale.(COULD have been an ESTATE sale…Perhaps it was given back to her following Carole’s death???)
It opens just fine but also inside was the remnant of some sepia paper. I cant tell whether it was a picture or a note. The red stone on front is in tact, no chips or scratches on outside, nothing broken .
IT and the brown velour dress w/ MrG’s corsage have the most in depth, personal information w/ them. I wish there were more, but maybe that certain PICTURE will crop up on this or that w/ her wearing it. (Again, the HUNT continues..: ) STAY TUNED……….
Rose..gowns, dresses, jewelry, rings more necklaces, (including w/the gowns is that white islet, shorter dressing gown that still has the cigarette smoke on it, which is kept sealed in a tight clothes bag to preserve the smell..) ), 2 furs including a matching mink hat, earrings, long beads, more pearls, handbags, a lovelyfeathered turban, 3 slips, a pink alligator skin compact, a pr of white embroidered gloves w/ tiny blue flowers ..Perfect shape not stained I put the compact and gloves inside the nicest bag, which is certainly something a lady would always carry w/her
) One of the other bags is a darling beaded one, dated 1928 torn on the inside but allintact on the outside. The REALLY elegant brown bag has the original coin purse and mirror inside.,.
The amazing thing I notice is that ALL of these except the black seal coat, which I will be forwardin g a picture of this week), are without labels, meaning she had her wardrobe, as you would suspect, handmade, by Travis Banton or whomever.ALso, 2 of the dresses are black, as is the coat and it occured to me of course! These people were photographed in black and white, certainly in whatever she wore Carole was lovely, but it was interesting to realize. This long “copper” color gown is sleeveless and the skirt is made up of about 8 panels. One panel at the back has a small tear in the seam and there is a small spot, but while it looks almost plain by itself it is the perfect formal gown to accessorize with the fur and earrring and matching shoes.( I leave that repair too to Ft Wayne).
Again just mentioning a few off the top of my head. I wil forward more pictures to you..
AGain, I hope sincerely that anybody out there who has any personal item that once belonged to Carole or Clark, to remember what they have. It is a massive responsibility but a Joyful one.(I can hear her laughing likely and saying “Why in HELL did you hang onto THAT Kid? and then hopefully is pleased.
These are all so tiny, it amazes me really, but on the other hand WHAT A GAL filled this gear!(Such Happy Joy in such a Tiny package!;) )
Your last line says it all. She probably would be amused and then not so surprised realizing her place in Hollywood hierarchy. She was very savvy about her profession!
I really appreciate your sharing your collection. It’s pretty exciting to see. I had no idea so much of her personal things were out there!
I would sell my soul for one of those items……
I wouldn’t let you Skot! Your soul is too kind.
Awww you’re such a sweetheart Carla…. One of these days ..I will posses an original artifact from Carole. I hope and pray every day.
Tally:
Are there any photos of the interior of Clark and Carole’s home in Encino? It would be fascinating to
view how their home was decorated and who possibly might have decorated their home. I read where Billy Haines was a dear friend of Carole. Billy Haines was a interior decorator for many of the stars in
Hollywood.
Hi Dawn!! I’m not Tally but I can answer your question. There ARE photos of the interior of the Gable’s Encino home and I’ll try to post some this week for you.
Billy Haines decorated Carole’s home when she was a single gal and there are photos of that home as well. I posted a photo of the sleigh bed she slept on a bit ago here but I’ll look for more of those too.
